Read to Self:
Children learn that there are 3 ways to read a book:
1. Read the pictures
2. Read the words
3. Retell the story
During Read to Self time they are able to do any of these 3 things with a book(s) of their choice. We also teach them what they should look like, feel like and sound like while doing these 3 things.
1. Sounds quiet
2. Feels still, stay in one spot the whole time
3. Looks like people are reading the whole time
4. Get started right away
We practice building our stamina the same way we learn to ride a bike! By practicing everyday and trying to do a little more, go longer, each day. Our lasts record is nearly 6 minutes!

I PICK
I PICK is another aspect of Daily 5 that helps students to be independent. It is important for students to be successful with their reading while they are learning to read independently. If they find the task to challenging and hard then they are not very likely to want to continue on their own. This is why we teach them how to pick 'good fit' books that they can be successful with, in the same way that we choose shoes by the qualities that we need for our purpose. We wouldn't pick snow boots to go to the beach! I wouldn't wear Mr. Webb's work boots to go to a dance! They would be too big for me! The I PICK strategy explains the 4 qualities a book should have in order to be a 'good fit'.

Work on Writing:
Children learn about how to work on writing independently. This will look and feel a lot like "Read to Self". During Work on Writing students work on writing of their choice. In the beginning we will provide more directed writing options until the students are able to begin to think of their own writing ideas. We will teach students how to choose their own type of free writing activity as we develop the Daily 5.
We also teach them what they should look like, feel like and sound like while Working on Writing.
1. Sounds quiet.
2. Feels still, stay in one spot the whole time.
3. Looks like people are writing the whole time.
4. If you want to write a word you don't know, try to write it then underline it and move on.
5. Get started right away.

Read to Someone:
Children learn about how to read together independently. This will look and feel a lot like "Read to Self". During read to someone students work on reading books of their choice. Students work on being good listeners while their friends are reading and taking turns to read each page or reading a book and switching.
We also teach them what they should look like, feel like and sound like while Reading with Someone.
1. Sit EEKK
2. Stay in one spot the whole time.
3. Read quietly.
4. Hold the book in the middle.
5. Get started right away.

Word Work:
We now have officially learned our last portion of Daily 5, Word Work. Hmmm? But we are only at 4? Yes, you are right. However, the last section of Daily 5 is Listen to Reading, which is listening to audio books. For this we do not have a class set to practice in the same way we have learned the other 4 centers of Daily 5. For Listen to Reading (audio books) I will be working with student individually to teach them how to set up the listening center and how to use it, and hopefully having a volunteer or two to help! I will do this as time permits in the classroom and as students finish their other work. Once everyone has had a chance to be taught how to use the listening center then it will be added in as an independent center for Daily 5.
So what is Word Work anyway? The students were very excited to learn that Word Work means you get to play with letters. This is already something they have learned in kindergarten and they love doing it! It also usually involves toys which makes it even more appealing. This past week we practiced using the word work toys and materials in centers. The kids were awesome at it and made some pretty creative letters while playing. I can't wait to see what they do with our Word Work centers! Check out their work in the pictures below.
We also began our first trials of true Daily 5 centers, which means doing all 5 elements at once in small rotating groups. Our first trial runs went really well and the students loved being able to have some variety to their daily 5 time. Next week we will really work on doing all 5 centers at once.
