Discovering new online connections! TTT: Teachers tweet too!
In the PME 800 course we were challenged to connect with an online resource pertaining to Self Regulated Learning. It was during this project that I made a connection to twitter! This is something I have avoided in the past. However my experience on this project showed me just how helpful twitter can be for connecting with professional communities and find resources. Are you interested in learning more about Self Regulated Learning? Perhaps you too would like to try twitter? Goal Setting for a better tomorrow
One of our goals at MPS is to help teach students about Self-Regulation for learning. What is Self-regulation for learning (SRL)? It is simply the ability of a student to be aware of their mind and body and how what is happening with their mind or body is either helping them or distract them from learning. For example, a student might learn to be aware that they daydream and lose focus. Another student might learn that they have an active body after music and gym and this means they have trouble sitting and listening at carpet. When students learn to be aware of their mind and body then they can learn what they need to do to adjust their mind and body into the right state for learning.
My Goal:
I would like to incorporate my schools NME practices into my daily teaching to provide better Self Regulation education to my students.
What I want to achieve stated as a SPECIFIC GOAL which includes my measures:
I am successfully incorporating phase 2 of Sturgeon School Division NME practices in my classroom by teaching brain lessons, taking 2-3 regulation breaks per day with my students and tracking student behavior by November 20, 2016.
Why?
This is a philosophy I believe in. I believe that it will better student learning for a lifetime. I believe it will increase positive student behavior. I also believe that this goal fits all the criteria of successful goal setting as described by our research in this course. It is specific (implement an approach), measurable (documented data and visible changes in teaching practices), achievable (I have everything I need to succeed), realistic (others in my professional community do it) and time-bound (6 weeks). I also feel this goal fits well with this course as there is some cross content between self regulated learning and how it can be taught/addressed with the research of the NME approach. I hope to learn more about self regulated learning through my own personal process of this project and also learn more about SRL through the achievement of this goal and its success with my students.
I also feel this process will help me develop a process of professional inquiry and goal setting within my professional context, for myself. I tend to work on team and group group goals in my context, this will be an excellent opportunity to focus on my own practices and really push myself to achieve goals I set for myself.

Steps:
- Week 1: track student behavior using current classroom practices and breaks
- Week 2: incorporate brain lessons
- Week 3: monitor student heart rates during regular classroom routines and activities and incorporate 1 regulation break into the classroom routine. (keep teaching brain lessons as need to complete curriculum)
- Week 4: track student behavior and increase regulation breaks to 2 a day
- Week 5: increase regulation breaks to 3 a day
- Week 6: track student behavior

Evidence/Results: When I incorporate NME practices in my classroom...
* We will use classroom 'bank' of regulation breaks and regulation 'menu' to choose our regulation activities.
* I will see students who know how to monitor their heart rates and associate increased or decreased heart rate in a variety of situations.
* I will have tracking of student behaviour that will help me to understand if there is a correlation between the regulation breaks and student behaviour.
* I will hear students using brain lesson vocabulary and/or skills throughout the school day.
* We will have classroom visuals to support our understanding of the zones of learning.
